What We Offer On This Site

Primarilly we are concerned with World Design for RPGs. We are home to The World of Garathen, an OGL compliant world, that you are welcome to use freely in your adventures, as well as contributing to, if you feel so inclined.

This is not a "Net World" project as such. I have been involved in many such projects over the years, and found that they rarely get off the ground due to lack of participation. Frequently, when they do remain for any length of time, they often degenerate into different camps splitting over how things are implemented. To avoid this problem, I am keeping this as my personal project, in which I welcome any contributions, with the understanding that any contributions may be subject to tweeking, in order to fit them into the over-all feel and themes of the world.

All materials in The World of Garathen will remain under the Open Gaming License and will remain free of charge. You are welcome to create variations of what we present, but ask that you give us credit for the original ideas we present. We would also, appreciate a copy of any varients, in case we like them and wish to include them in our world.

A Word About What Rules System We Use

For many years, I have been playing role-playing games, primarilly using various AD&D/D&D rules supplied by TSR/Wizards of the Coast. usually as the Game Master.

After a while, I got a little tired of some of their heavy-handed tactics and began looking for alternatives. I wasn't totally happy with most of the alternative rules either, so I kept playing regular D&D. Finally, WOC came up with the d20 and Open Gaming Licenses, that allowed people to add customized materials while maintaining compatibility with the system I had played over the years.

After what looked like a promising start, I found I still wasn't a huge fan of the way the company worked, so I started creating materials to fill in the gaps to produce a stand alone game system.

I was not the only one in the gaming community that had this in mind, and currently, there are several OGL systems available. Rather than re-invent the wheel, I decided to just use what others have created. Currently, my favorite system if found at The Hypertext d20 SRD, but any similar system that is available, either online or in print (as well as the "official" rules) should work well with what we have online.

Note: We have made an attempt to make things fairly generic, so if you happen to prefer a different game system, It shouldn't take too much tinkering to use it in your gaming sessions.
