Descendant Chart for Joseph Byerly
Joseph Byerly was born circa 1730.1 Joseph died in 1803.1
Joseph arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam on the ship Louisa on 8 November
1752. He came from the Palatinate to Pennsylvania, then to Maryland, and about
1783 to Rockingham Co., Virginia. The land purchased by Joseph laid in the heart
of the Shenandoah Valley with a spectacular view. The Blue Ridge range is to
the east, the Alleghaney mountains to the west. The land was located along the
Great Wagon Road stretching north and south through the valley. The name later
given to the area where Joseph settled was "Pleasant Valley."
It is estimated that Joseph owned around 600 acres of land. Lands received
by his sons through his will totaled 512 acres. This was after sales of 50 acres
to Henry Dike on 19 November 1805 and another sale to Christian Niswanger in
April of 1789.
Joseph established a mill in Pleasant Valley, although some say it was a
distillery before becoming a mill. Another descendant recalls a comment that
Joseph was a distiller. This is not in conflict with the Mennonite or Brethren
faiths of the Byerlys. The Temperance Movement was a child of the early 19th
century. Until then, tax lists revealed that many Mennonites and Brethren distilled
liquor as most Germans. Homemade beer was not thought of as an intoxicating drink,
but as a quencher during the hot Virginia summers. Drinking, more or less temperately,
was an unquestioned practice until the second quarter of the 18th century. They
did fight excesses though. The Dunkers were the first to go on record against
any form of indulgence in alcohol long before the temperance movement reached
organized form.
The mill, built around 1800, was destroyed by fire in 1886. It stood on
Swift Run Gap road where it crossed Kirtesses' Creek.2
The name of Joseph wife is unknown.
Joseph is buried in an unmarked grave in the Byerly Cemetery on the original
farm at Pleasant Valley with two of his sons, Joseph II and David, and their
wifes. Joseph's will was burned in the Civil War and only the administrators
are given. Executor bonds, 21 June 1803, list Joseph Biyer, Sr. descendant. Executors
listed are Joseph, David, and John Byerly. No other children are listed. The
bond was set for $40,000.3

the cemetery. Delilah IS buried in the Centerview Cemetery. She is buried immediately
north of Samuel Martin Byerly. The reason no information is available in the
cemetery books is she has no headstone. There on the front page of the Standard-Herald,
Warrensburg, MO, for October 13, 1896 was a tiny blurb
An Aged Lady Dead
Grandma Byerly, 79 years of age, died at her home in Centerview, Sunday. The
funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Mohler Monday evening, after which the remains
were interred in the cemetery at Centerview.
Sexton book for the cemetery. I talked with Betty, she pulled the card from the
file. Delilah bought the plot in C' view Cemetery. 6 lots, together. Samuel
is buried in the southmost lot, Delilah is next north of him, and then a space,
and then a child is buried, with the remaining two lots unused. Tom, it occurs
to me this is most likely the burial of Rue by McVey, as there were no other
deaths of children in the family I am at a total loss to say why there is no
headstone for Delilah. And, by the way, the name on the card was Delilah Byerly,
just like I've spelled it here. That, combined with the autograph in Ottoline
May McVey Short's book, proves, to me, anyway, that is how Delilah spelled her
name. I see many researchers and others who leave off the final "h".

- Ibid., Jonathan paid taxes on land in Section 21 of Woodland
Township. He had patented land in sections 26 and 29 of Woodland, so he bought
the land in section 21 from someone other than the gov't. I then went back to
the recorder's office and checked out section 21 in Woodland Twp. Jonathan sold
land there in 1847, 1853, 1855 and 1868. On the 1868 deed it says Jonathan and
Lydia Emmert, his wife, of Salem Township, Carroll County, IL. So, the old bugger
moved on us. Since Jonathan is nowhere to be found on the 1870 census, in Illinois,
I think it likely the 1868 sale--7 September 1868 to be exact, was probably just
before the family moved out of Illinois.
- Ibid., On the Bond for Deed, Jonathan is buying 120 acres
of land from Joseph Drais. Jonathan is bonding himself to give Joseph $ 1800--$
1,000 when Jonathan takes possession, and $800 on the first of October, 1868.
Plus Jonathan is to pay the taxes on the land in the meantime. Joseph Drais,
in turn, is bound to not sell the land to someone else. From the checking I've
done, this was Jonathan's main farm. Which he, in turn, sold to son Joseph H
Emmert later on.

that Martha's stone was illegible to some extent, all she could make out was
"Martha Emmert" "dau of J & L" "Died Dec 26 18??" "9ys 5ms 16ds". So, doing
the math, and knowing that the 1860 Carroll County census data that Jonathan
and Lydia and family appear in, was taken 8 Jun 1860, we have Martha Emmert,
born 10 July 1852, died 26 December 1861. This is assuming her age of 7 was
accurate on the census, and because all the other kids data was correct, I think
it's a safe assumption.

in the Dunkard Brethren paper, Bible Monitor. A congregation of the Dunkard Brethren
Church was organized October 13, 1926 at Elk City, OK. The people forming this
congregation had been COB. They formed their own organization with Elders Amos
Leedy and J.A.Root, Ministers, T.C.Root & Roland Smith and deacon,John Root.
The Root family moved to McClave, CO, where they were active in the Dunkard
Brethren congregation. Descendants are still active at that place. Amos Leedy
spent several winters at Waterford, CA. While quite active at the beginning,
with the moving away of the Root families, the congregation soon withered away.

the other pages being the legalese associated with the probation of one's will
and subsequent estate. When looking at his estate docket entry it states
that the estate was presented for probate on Feb. 12, 1848 and I can tell from
the individuals mentioned that he was a resident of Jefferson township. The exexutors
were Mary Rohrer and Daniel Noffsinger with surity being provided by George Gilbert
and John Staufer. The abstracted will entry I have states that he left a widow,
a daughter Barbara and sons Samuel, David and Elijah. His estate packet, and
case, are #2059.
